Automatic Driving Lessons in Pontefract with a Former DVSA Driving Examiner
Learning to drive is one of the most important skills you will ever gain. Choosing the right instructor makes a huge difference.
My name is Paul Robinson and I provide automatic driving lessons in Pontefract and surrounding areas for learners who want calm, structured and professional tuition.
Before returning to driving instruction, I spent several years working as a DVSA Driving Examiner conducting thousands of driving tests. I originally qualified as a driving instructor in 2008 and re qualified again in 2025 before returning to instruction. That experience gives my learners a unique advantage because I understand exactly how driving tests are assessed and what examiners are looking for.
Lessons are delivered in a relaxed and supportive environment, focused not only on passing the test but also on developing safe and confident drivers for life.
If you are thinking about learning to drive, the best place to start is with an Assessment Drive or Trial Lesson.
Most learners choose to start with an Assessment Drive or Trial Lesson as it gives them a clear understanding of how quickly they can progress and what to expect from future lessons.
Why Learn with a Former DVSA Driving Examiner
Learning to drive is one of the most important skills we gain in life, so it should really be viewed as an investment rather than simply a cost. Many people will spend a great deal of time trying to book an earlier driving test, often when they are not ready and sometimes against the advice of their instructor. This can lead to repeated test attempts and additional test fees, costing hundreds of pounds. In reality, that time and money is often far better invested in quality instruction that properly prepares a learner for the driving test and for safe driving afterwards.
For that reason it is worth knowing that I am a fully qualified DVSA Approved Driving Instructor and display the green instructor badge in the windscreen. Some instructors you may come across are still trainees and display a pink badge while they are qualifying.
During my time with the DVSA I conducted driving tests for cars, extended tests for disqualified drivers and vocational tests for larger vehicles. I saw first hand what separates confident, capable drivers from those who struggle under pressure.
That experience now allows me to teach learners in a way that closely reflects the standards expected on the real driving test.
Many of my pupils say the biggest difference is how clearly things are explained and how quickly their confidence improves once they understand what examiners are actually assessing, rather than relying on some of the myths or advice that can often be found in online videos or across social media.
Automatic Driving Lessons in Pontefract
I specialise in automatic driving lessons in Pontefract and the surrounding area.
Automatic cars remove the need to manage gears and clutch control, which allows learners to focus more attention on observation, anticipation and planning.
For many learners this makes the learning process smoother and less stressful.
Lessons are always structured and focused on steady progress. Rather than rushing through topics, we build skills step by step so that each stage becomes comfortable before moving on to the next. Training is always client centred so that lessons reflect your individual learning goals and needs.
Many learners find they progress more efficiently with longer lessons because it allows more time to practise and develop confidence during each session.
For this reason, lessons are typically delivered in a minimum duration of 2 hours, which helps make each session more productive and allows steady progress to be made.
Start with an Assessment Drive or Trial Lesson
Before committing to a course of lessons, many learners prefer to experience a lesson first.
An Assessment Drive or Trial Lesson is the best way to do this.
- Discuss your previous experience, if any
- Spend time driving in real road conditions
- Identify the skills you already have
- Identify the areas that need development
- Create a clear plan for your future lessons
For learners who have never driven before, this lesson simply acts as a calm introduction to the car and the basic controls.
This approach allows you to experience the car, my teaching style and the overall structure of the training before deciding how you would like to continue.

Calm and Patient Driving Lessons
Learning to drive can feel daunting at first. That is completely normal.
My approach is calm, patient and supportive. Many learners tell me that the biggest difference they notice is how relaxed they feel during lessons.
Clear explanations and structured guidance help remove the uncertainty that many learners experience during the early stages of learning.
Confidence grows naturally when learners understand not just what to do, but why they are doing it.
Realistic Mock Driving Tests
As a former DVSA Driving Examiner, I am also able to offer realistic mock driving tests for learners who want to experience the pressure of a test before their real one.
These are particularly useful shortly before a practical test because they provide a clear picture of how a learner is likely to perform under test conditions.
The mock test follows the same format as the real driving test and is followed by detailed feedback so that any final areas for improvement can be addressed before the real test.
Many learners find this experience significantly reduces nerves on test day.
Intensive Driving Courses
For learners who would prefer to learn over a shorter period of time, I also offer intensive driving courses.
These courses are particularly suited to learners who need to pass quickly. This may be during school, college or university holidays, before starting a new job, before a theory test certificate expires, due to another urgent need, or simply a desire to obtain a full driving licence quickly.
Some learners choose to begin with weekly lessons before moving into a more intensive approach once they feel ready.
Training remains structured and focused so that learners build the skills and confidence needed not only to pass the test but to drive safely afterwards.
