What Is the Diamond Taxi Test?
The Diamond Advanced Taxi Test is a recognised assessment used by licensing authorities across the UK. It ensures you can drive safely, smoothly, and professionally when transporting paying passengers. Many councils require it when applying for or renewing a taxi or private hire licence.
What the Test Involves
The assessment lasts around 45 minutes and covers a variety of road types and driving scenarios. You’ll need to show calm, confident driving and excellent control throughout.
Passing requires no serious or dangerous faults and no more than nine minor errors.
- Vehicle control – smooth acceleration, braking, and steering
- Observation and awareness – effective mirror use and hazard anticipation
- Compliance – following road signs, markings, and speed limits
- Reverse manoeuvre – typically into a side road on the left
